3 Must Avoid Mistakes Newbie Affiliate Marketers Make

Affiliate marketing can be one of the most effective and powerful ways of earning income online. There are many benefits associated with online marketing. Now more than ever, people are exploring different opportunities to gain some additional income or work toward full-time income. When jumping in, here are 3 Must Avoid Mistakes.

Affiliate marketing offers a lot of flexibility, not only in the types of programs that are available but also in how these programs can be promoted.

A big benefit of affiliate marketing is that you can work on your own schedule, and from anywhere you desire as long as you have internet access. Since affiliate marketing programs are easy to join, more and more people are jumping on board and looking to get rich. Or atleast make some income as a side-hustle. Either way, it isn’t necessarily all a bed of roses as some would lead you to believe.

Mistakes Newbie Affiliate Marketers Make

Like any business, there are a lot of things to be aware and much to learn. Here are 3 of the most common mistakes that can get you off path. Too often people want to jump in and just start making money. Well, it doesn’t really work that way, and although you may get lucky and make a commission here or there, it not’ a great way to start.

A little bit of planning goes a long way. Do your research, develop a basic strategy of how you would like to promote, and then find the programs that fit your desired niche and promotion plan. Some strategic planning will help avoid these common mistakes.

Mistake 1: Choosing the wrong affiliate product or program for the wrong reasons.

In a rush to start earning commissions, people may just jump in headfirst. Although I always love the enthusiasm and zeal, too often, people just “jump on the bandwagon” product or program. These are the products and programs that they may see others doing well. They may be the “best programs” on a list or the “hot” items.

New marketers may choose the product that is in demand without regard to other considerations for a best fit. And just as concerning is that if they jump onto a program with a hot product, they have jumped straight into the fire of heavy competition. Those marketers out there with a lot of experience, knowledge, and resources, (including big advertising accounts) make it very hard for the little guy. They can eat you up.

Now I’m not saying you can’t or won’t have some success, however it may be very lean. Just know for sure what you’re up against. You might want to give some consideration to taking a little less aggressive path, which could ultimately lead you to more success… and commissions in your pocket.

There are also big benefits in choosing a product in a niche or area that you have interest and therefore that you likely have more experience. Interest generally leads to experience. And it may not necessarily be professional work experience, but rather your hobby or passion that has made you extremely knowledgeable.… perhaps even an expert.

Certainly, as you learn more, you have a better chance of positioning yourself as a niche expert if your passionate about it. Your knowledge and passion go a long way to help you find your stride and be successful with affiliate marketing. Pick a product that appeals to you. Then perform additional research to determine the best marketing strategies. Promoting a product or program that you are more passionate about is much easier than simply promotion for the sake of earnings.

What is the “right” program?

Selecting the right program correlates right back to what best fits your goals and desires. How much money do you want to make? $500/month, or $10,000/month? How much time do you have? Is this a side-hustle to pick up a little supplemental income or are you more interested in a full-time job?

Knowing these answers helps determine a “best fit” product or program. Will you sell low, medium, or high-ticket products or programs? If your goal is to make $100k per year, you probably don’t want to select a product that will only make a low dollar commission of $3 per sale. This option will take a lot of sales to reach your goal and therefore isn’t very realistic.

If you want to make $100k/year, you will need to look to a high-ticket program where you can make $1000 per sale for example. Otherwise, you just won’t have a snowball’s chance of meeting your goal. If you’re a newbie and looking for simple, high-ticket programs, here is a program that I have done well with and recommend. It is worth your time to check it out.

And give some thought about long term residual income. The best programs that produce income over and over are membership programs. And there are a ton of great programs out there. Just think about all of the subscription programs that marketers need for running their business.

Most of these platforms, tools or SAS have affiliate programs that you can join. My favorites right now are Groove and HighLevel. These make a ton of sense as all in one programs and are growing like crazy. It takes longer to start earning money, but once you do, it is monthly, like clock work.

Too many new marketers overlook these because they take a while to build up. Affiliate marketing is much like investing – you want to be diversified! Don’t put all your focus and efforts, and advertising all in one basket.

So you will want to create a small basket of 4 or 5 offerings that is compatible to your goals, and it will be much easier to focus and build a successful program.  As most of you already know, (or will learn), affiliate marketing is much more complex than simply pasting a link all over the internet. You can try that, but it won’t take long to realize you need to market in a strategic way if you’re going to have success.

Mistake 2: Joining too many affiliate programs.

Since affiliate programs are so easy to join, you might be tempted to join a whole plethora of programs. After all, if 1 is good then 50 would be better, right? Well, not necessarily. I’m not saying you shouldn’t join more than one. But keep the numbers realistic and expand in a logical, strategic manner. As I said, a small basket of 4 or 5 offerings might be the best starting point.  Then as you become more established, it is easier to expand and naturally promote more.

Once you have selected your niche, find common products that A) fit your goals and niche and B) complement one another. For example, if you’re writing a blog or article about affiliate marketing, you can easily incorporate a Beginners Affiliate Marketing training course offer. They fit well together and can easily be discussed in this single paragraph.

Or you can add in different courses such as Coaching, an Expert Podcast, or a Passive Income Course. They all fit under that same umbrella and pair well.

Now say for example, you wanted to include the new all-in-one platform that is the best thing since slice bread and saves a ton of costs. Any platform or tools that a marketer needs is always a good fit. Similarities creates continuity and is easier for you to market together in the same blog or article.

It makes sense to have multiple affiliate programs to offer. Just be cautious in not getting so carried away that you lose sight of what you’re doing or where you’re going. Be strategic about your programs and marketing. Don’t let joining too many programs distract you and create shiny object syndrome. Then you’re just chasing your tail and you become more inefficient and ineffective.

Shiny Object Syndrome for High-Ticket Affiliate Programs

Shiny object syndrome is especially true for affiliate marketers searching for high-ticket affiliate programs. You know, those with products that are priced over $700, $800 or more.  And marketers try one program and find it too difficult, hit hurdles, or just get impatient and then jump to the next program.

Not only is that inefficient but it is also costly. Most of these programs are expensive to join. Here’s a free 12-Day challenge and training that addresses shiny object syndrome for affiliate marketers. This free training helps affiliate marketers find their footing and develop a solid foundation to build upon. The program also offers strategies to build your success. Again, this goes back to goal setting and strategic planning.

Mistake 3: Not buying the product or trying the program or service.

As an affiliate, your main goal is to effectively promote the product or service. And in doing so, you will be rewarded with commissions for your successful efforts. First, get out of the frame of mind of “selling” and instead focus on how you can help others by solving a problem, or making things easier, better, cheaper, more strategic or glamourous.  Whatever the case, you are solving problems or helping in some way. And the more urgent or bigger the problem, the easier it will be to promote. To do this, it takes knowledge of both the product and the customers.

To be successful, you must know everything inside and out about the product or program that you’re offering, and the target customer.

  • That includes the good and the bad, the Pro’s and the Con’s. Know the best points and weakest points.
  • It includes all “details” of how it works, especially if it is a platform, tool, or service. Get deep into the weeds on this one.
  • This includes differences and similarities. How is yours better? How is it not as good?
  • It includes how others are selling. What is working and what is not.
  • Tie all this together and come up with the best angle to fix a problem.

One of the best ways to know everything about a product or service, is to you it yourself. Then you are much more knowledgeable about it and can better position yourself and the offering.

Research all the reviews of affiliate marketers peddling this product or program. I use the word “peddling” as many reviews that you will find are actually quite comical. They come across as nothing more than a salesman trying to say or do anything to get a sale.

3 Must Avoid Mistakes Newbie Affiliate Marketers Make. a salesman
Don’t be this guy! Avoid coming across as someone just trying to make a sale.

Of course, they’re going to say, “it’s a great program”, (or product). But often times, they don’t, or can’t even logically explain it. There isn’t any credibility there. Although they may get a few sales, without credibility, they may put a lot of time and effort in it and get very little, if any, return.

Don’t do that. Don’t be like them. That is a waste of your time. The better educated you are about your offering, and the more experience you have, you will be that much more credible. When you know what you’re talking about, and you provide facts and research, then you will be that much more credible, and will have better results.

That is why I am a firm believer in purchasing the product or program. For example, this is a  high-ticket program that I watched the webinar just to learn about. I am always researching new high-ticket programs to see what others are doing, what the angle or unique selling point is. I was so impressed with this program on the webinar, that not only did I want to promote it, but I bought it. So, I will be providing more updates on this program in the future. This new program webinar is well worth your review as a learning experience. You don’t have to buy it – just watch and learn. It truly is an outstanding webinar and a great new evergreen model.

Research and continued learning is the most important things you can do as an affiliate marketer. It is important to know what is good from a program quality offering perspective, and what is working from the program sales perspective.

This is just the very tip of the iceberg when it comes to marketing affiliate products and program considerations.

I hope these basic tips were helpful and we can get into more details soon. Many affiliate marketers make these basic mistakes, especially when just getting started. We all have made these mistakes, plus many, many more. But this is how we learn. And the great thing is that you can make some moola along the way, even if there is some luck involved.

Rather than leaving your success to luck though, the best thing to do is to take time to build a strategy and plan. Research what others are doing. Then every so often, take the time to analyze your activities and marketing strategies to determine if you’re on the right track.

Adjust as needed. If done properly, you will make the most of your time and efforts while maximizing your affiliate marketing profits. Have fun with it and get out there and make some moola!

All the best,

Dave
